Frequently Asked Questions
When will the new plate be available?
Where can I buy the plate?
The plate is available at all Montana County Treasurer Motor Vehicle Offices, the same place you go to renew your vehicle registration. Find your county office here. Some offices are busier than normal so please plan for longer wait times. Plates are not sold through the Glacier Conservancy.
Note: The Flathead County DMV is moving on Monday, April 18th to 290 A North Main, Kalispell.
I have the old plate and already paid my annual registration. Can I get the new plate now?
Yes! Go to the renewals window at the DMV to update your plate. You do not need to take a number and wait in line to do this.
Note: You will need to pay the plate fee for the new plate.
How much does the plate cost and what will my donation be used for?
The license plates are available for $45 at all Montana Department of Motor Vehicles county offices. There is a one-time processing fee of $10 and a one-time production charge of $10 with the remaining $25 going to the Glacier National Park Conservancy. The plates must be renewed annually and can be personalized (six characters or less) for an additional fee. You must register your vehicle annually to display the Glacier National Park Specialty plates on your vehicle.
The cost of the plates and renewing them each year includes a donation that goes directly to the Glacier National Park Conservancy. By purchasing these plates you are supporting youth education, wildlife research, trail rehabilitation and more.
Is there an application for personalized plates?
Yes, if you want to personalize a sponsored plate, there are additional sponsor fees. For requirements and additional information, see the Application for Personalized License Plates.
Is my contribution tax deductible?
License plate fees are not tax deductible.
I am a license plate collector or I don’t live in Montana. Can I buy a sample plate?
Souvenir plates are now available to purchase at Conservancy Park Stores and our online store. You can buy a souvenir plate in our online store here.
How did you come up with the design for this plate?
In the summer of 2021, the Glacier Conservancy’s Creative Lead, Becca Wheeler, painted three designs that were voted on by the public. The winning plate design features the northern lights above St. Mary Lake.
